The history of Songdo

Holiday Inn Incheon Songdo is one of Songdo International Business District’s leading hotels. The Past

Songdo urban development project was first introduced in 2001 through a long-term public-private partnership between New York-based Gale International, Korea-based POSCO E&C, and spearheaded by the Incheon Metropolitan City. Aiming to become the foundation for smart and sustainable cities of the generations to come, Songdo IBD was built from the ground up, integrating advanced technology into every single part of the city. It was developed on 1,500 acres of land along Incheon’s waterfront, consisting of 35 million square feet of residential area and 40 million square feet of commercial area. And as a green city, approximately 40% of the entire area has been deliberately designated as green public space, making Songdo not only technologically advanced, but also environmentally friendly.  

From its initial Master Plan, the construction of Songdo IBD started in 2005 and finally began operating as an autonomous city in the year 2015.

The Present
Although it has yet fully completed, Songdo IBD is, at the moment, a thriving and fast-growing district. It is home to more than 100 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED-certified buildings. Over 70,000 people are now working in the district, and more than half of them are currently residing here. These numbers are expected to grow exponentially within the next few years.

In addition to being a smart city and a new business district, Songdo IBD is also making its name as a tourist destination. Architecturally charming places such as Tri-bowl and NC Cube Canal Walk, as well as natural oasis such as Central Park, are the main reasons both domestic and international travelers are pouring in to admire the smart city.

South Korea’s current holder of the tallest building, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower, is also situated in this metropolis.

The Future
True to its nickname as the ubiquitous city of the future, Songdo IBD has been crafted with the latest technology available today. Plus, it is capable of evolving based on new advancements of tomorrow. The district embodies the vision and the future of Incheon and South Korea.

The final phase of construction of Songdo IBD is expected to complete by the year 2020. Once completed, the metropolis will cover more than 100 million square feet of land. From mix-used multi-purpose areas to modern transport system and technology, Songdo will become the ideal combination of residential, cultural, business, retail, and recreational environments. The South Korean government also envisions that roughly 300,000 people will be living in the city once it has been completed.
